I wish I could be as pretty as her.
Her, with the pretty hair, and the dark eyes.
The chapped lips that she's constantly nipping at,
even while they bleed.
"It makes me feel more real,"
she tells me when I question her tactics.
She's still stunning, even when she bleeds.
I wish I could be as careless as that man over there.
This man, who twirls his wedding band around his finger.
I wonder to myself,
"Is he thinking about his family back home?
The wife who takes care of his kids while he's working hard to give them the roof over their heads?
The children who call him constantly on his lunch break to ask him if he's okay?"
I watch as he slips it off and shoves it into his pocket.
A woman greets him.
He kisses her passionately.
"Just for tonight," she must be whispering.
"Just for tonight."
I still wish I could be as careless.
I wish I could be as interesting as the girl under a million jackets.
She's petite, even under the frame the jackets create for her.
Her eyes are rimmed with black,
Her legs are covered in bruises.
What a story she's possibly got to tell.
I watch as she rises and scurries off into the bathroom.
She emerges a few minutes later,
Rubbing her hand over her mouth and shaking.
What a story, alright.
I wish I could kiss as beautifully as you.
You, with the dark hair and bruised lips.
You breathe into my neck and tell me how beautiful I am.
How beautiful my naked form feels under your rough finger tips.
I wish I could feel as beautiful as you make me out to be.
I wish I could be everyone, feel like everyone.
But suddenly, I am nothing.
I am not wishing to be careless, interesting, or stunning.
Only wishing to be yours.
And tonight I am.
